Veteran’s Day, formally called Armistice Day, is a holiday that was originally intended to honor the end of World War 1 which ended on November 11, 1918. Today, Veteran’s Day honors all soldiers who have served and fought to protect our principles of justice, democracy, and freedom. This national holiday is a day that brings together our local communities, state, and nation together. It is with great honor that the Blanco county veteran’s group is able to bring the community together in celebration of this national holiday.
Did you know that in 1935 the U.S Congress designated highway US 281 the American Legion Memorial Highway which would run from Canada to Mexico? In 1937 the American Legion Memorial Highway Post 352 was chartered and later the American Legion Auxiliary group would be formed. The American Legion Auxiliary is an important part of the foundation for veterans; it is an organization for patriotic women. Some members are former veteran’s themselves while others are wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, grand-daughters, and great grand-daughters of veteran’s who served our country.
If you are a veteran yourself or have a family member who is a veteran and live in the hill country, consider joining this wonderful group and partake in the festivities this weekend honoring and preserving the memories of our wonderful service men and women. Thank you to the American Legion Memorial Highway Post and the American Legion Auxiliary for helping us to celebrate one our greatest national holidays and honoring those who have fought and served in the protection of our nation.
